CHROMATOGRAPHY |   Syringe filters

Filtration of the sample to remove particulate matter can be performed through the use of easy-to-use syringe filters. With a female luer lock inlet and a male slip outlet, the syringe filter easily fits onto the end of the disposable syringe containing the sample. This connection can be further strengthened by using a luer lock tip syringe, creating a more secure connection that can withstand higher filtration pressure. The type of membrane varies in properties and should be selected based on the characteristics of the matrix and the solvent: CA - Cellulose Acetate, NY - Nylon, PTFE - Polytetrafluoroethylene, PES - Polyethersulfone, PVDF - Polyvinylidenefluoride, RC - Regenerated Cellulose, MCE - Mixed esters of Cellulose, PP - Polypropylene. The choice of porosity depends on the application and, in the case of HPLC, on the particle size of the column: 0.20 µm up to ≤3 µm, 0.45> 3 µm. The volume of the sample will determine the choice of diameter, ensuring that the filter is not overloaded: Ø 13 mm up to 10 ml - Ø 25 mm  up to 100 ml.

Technical specifications

CA

Cellulose acetate

Hydrophilic material, offers the lowest protein retention available. High efficiency and lower consumption when filtering protein solutions. Very resistant: ideal for aqueous solutions even very alcoholic and if the recovery of proteins is crucial. Applications: filtration of protein and enzymatic solutions, cold sterilization and cell culture media.

PES

Polyethersulfone

Hydrophilic material, compatible with organic solvents. Applications: water filtration, chemical reagents, high temperature liquids.

NY

Nylon

Hydrophilic material, suitable for aqueous solutions and for use in HPLC. Maintains its structure under normal filtration conditions, eliminating the need for humectants. Autoclavable at 135 ° C. Applications: bacterial and particle removal, filtration of aqueous solutions and organic solvents.

PVDF

Polyvinylidenefluoride

Hydrophobic material, not wettable. It allows the passage of humid air or other gases, even when the pressure differential is very small. Applications: purification of fluids.

PTFE

Polytetrafluoroethylene

Hydrophobic material compatible with aggressive solvents (acids and bases), with a low level of extractables. Used for solvent filtration, HPLC and pre filtration. Applications: filtration of strong acids and aggressive solutions, phase separations, aerosol sampling. Also available in hydrophilic version.

RC

Regenerated cellulose

Hydrophilic and solvent resistant, they are ideal for removing particles from solvents. They are also characterized by a low non-specific adsorption. Applications: purification of fluids, 0.45 for degassing.

PP

Polypropylene

For aqueous or organic solutions with high levels of debris and for solutions that are difficult to filter. It is a hydrophilic membrane with a wide range of chemical compatibility with organic solvents. Versatile and economical with a long list of chemical resistances such as acids, bases, alcohols and esters. It is highly resistant to solvents and a non-specific low absorption material.

MCE

Mixed cellulose esters

It is the standard material for membrane filtration techniques. Often used for particle retention. Applications: checkered sterile for water microbiology with MF technique.
